Miscellaneous Notes
  • Boston Terriers, despite the name and partial ancestry, aren't truly terriers. I have placed them in among the mastiffs after long consideration based on ancestry and the fact that the French Bulldog and Miniature Bulldog, two other lap-sized mastiff-descended breeds, are listed here.
  • Alternative names for the Boston Terrier include Roundhead Bull Terrier, Boston Bull Terrier, American Bull Terrier, and Boston Bulldog.
  • The Old Boston Bulldogge (aka Old Boston Bulldog) is a descendant of the same stock as the early Boston Terrier, then known as the American Bull Terrier, but the two breeds have been divided for decades. It will get a separate listing as soon as I find some published materials on it; in the meantime any resource dealing with the earliest history of the Boston Terrier should be relevant.

  • [title unknown] by Sherwin Hawley. In: [magazine title unknown], 1906. Three-page article discussing the high price that Boston Terriers were commanding at that time, and the direction the breed was going. According to the author, a Boston Terrier cost more than any other pet or house dog with the exception of the "Pekinese Spaniel" (referring here to average puppy prices, not to the higher prices paid for outstanding individuals). A fair price at that time was $50 for a 2 month old puppy, and $100-150 for a 6 month old. Prize winners were known to change hands for as much as $1,000-2,000. Discussion then moves on to standard set for the breed as to terrier versus bulldog attributes. James Watson is quoted on his opinion of the breed's short twisted tail and other preferences of the time in achieving the ideal Boston Terrier and how the breed standards are determined by "specialty clubs". An interesting read to see how a breed of dog comes to be formed standard-wise as well as a nice bit of dog history. There are several illustrative photos.
